citizen science

citizen science*

*No citizenship required

Citizen science is a term used around the world to identify research activities conducted by volunteers, as opposed to formally-trained scientists. In birding, eBird and winter bird counts are examples of volunteers collecting and sharing data for scientific studies. The term citizen is used broadly to include all people; there is no requirement for legal US citizenship, We are all citizens of planet Earth. All people, regardless of citizen status are welcome at Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis citizen science events.

We recommend you check out Deja Perkins’ ACM program on participatory methods (video, left). Her explanation of citizen v. community science starts at 28:28.

winter bird count

How to get involved

ACM was proud to cosponsor the 2023 Minneapolis West Winter Bird Count circle with Urban Bird Collective. The Winter Bird Count is typically held on the third weekend of December. If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s count, please contact admin@minneapolisaudubon.org for more information or to sign up. Be sure to include the number of people in your party. People of all levels of experience are welcome.

The WBC is a wonderful way to connect with other birders, gain confidence with your bird ID skills, enjoy the beauty of winter, and contribute to bird conservation research. All are welcome!
